Health and Wellness

Health is wealth! In this segment, we will delve into community health. We will also take a look into food disparities and the insidious implications of food inequality in our community. According to statistics, neighborhoods with fewer fresh produce sources and plentiful fast food restaurants and convenience stores are at higher risk for obesity and diabetes. The American Medical Association recommends that adults have 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity weekly, eat a healthy diet, and maintain a healthy weight. Making healthy dietary choices is a step in the right direction on your health and wellness journey.

Below is a video for you to review at your leisure. Hopefully you will find the video entertaining as well as informative. The video is shared from another platform, we do not own the content.

Our community unity team decided to extend women's history month indefinitely. Moving forward, this segment will feature prominent women in society, past or present, and their accomplishments.

The next installment to our women's history segment is on a dynamic woman in Detroit's history. Aretha Louise Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee on March 25th, 1942 to the Reverand Clarance L. Franklin and Barbara V. Siggers.

2025 American History

For Black History Month February 2025, once again we honor Detroit's own Queen of Soul and honor and applaud the Reverand Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At just 16, Aretha toured with Dr. King using her voice to inspire change. Their mutual dedication to the Civil Rights Movement led to a strong bond between the two. Aretha honored his legacy by performing "Precious Lord Take My Hand" at his funeral in 1968. According to Jet Magazine, Aretha was part of a seven-city tour that raised more than $250,000.00 for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization that Dr. King was both founder and president. Aretha's 1967 hit record, "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" became the Civil Right's anthem.
